SASF String Quartet Competition

The aim of this competition is to provide young emerging quartets (18-28 years) the opportunity to perform at a national event, to connect with like-minded musicians and build professional relationships within the South African strings community, to be challenged by learning new exciting repertoire and to refine their technical abilities and ensemble performance techniques. The competition will consist of two rounds – an online preliminary round, and an in-person final round which will be adjudicated by at least three prominent local string players.

What to expect and important info

The convention will start on 1 May 2025 at 9am. During the course of the convention attendees have the option to attend various activities such as presentations, workshops, masterclasses, discussions, exhibitions in the foyer and concerts. The convention is open to students (all ages), teachers, performers, luthiers and enthusiasts interested to learn and share knowledge about string instruments practiced within Southern Africa. We will try our best to organise the schedule in such a way that there are no clashes with rehearsals or similar topic-related activities. Some of the activities and artists attendees can already look forward to experiencing a workshop session on bluegrass music by Janna Khweis, orchestra excerpts by various professional string lecturers, Asakhe Cuntsulana’s Ingoma YomHambi concert – Song of a Traveller and performances by Guy Buttery, the Gqeberha Trio, the Baxter Trio, the Odeon String Quartet, the Juliet String Quartet and the ensemble East Meets West.
