Background

The South African Strings Foundation (SASF)

SASF is a non-profit organisation aiming to develop a strong and long-lasting sense of community between South African string players, including traditional string instruments, violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, harp, electric and acoustic guitar players. This initiative stems from the initial creation – South Africa’s first online convention for string instrumentalists in October 2020. The successful response to this inauguration was a clear indication of the general need of artists to learn, share, connect and inspire each other. The primary focus of this is to build overall access to music education and string pedagogy while ensuring a South African string education of high standard that will allow a progressive future for all South African string players.

Vision and Mission

The South African Strings Foundation (SASF) aims to serve as a long-lasting educational platform that will generate access to resources, provide self-learning experiences, generate connections with others in the community, and enable general improvement of the standard of string instrument playing in South Africa.

The core concept of the SASF rests on four pillars of value: to inspire, to learn, to share, and to connect. These pillars play an essential role in building a successful and strong community which will enable:

  • a rise in the overall standard of performance and teaching,
  • raised awareness of the importance of music education,
  • more work opportunities for string players,
  • the development of a strong and resourceful foundation for South African string methodology, and
  • musicians to have a heightened sense of belonging to a community.
